Let’s Get Shit Done (or, “Shift Happens”)… or “Let’s Get Shift Done”

the red pill or blue pill?

Is it possible, in this year of our Lord 2025, in the year when so many of us are convinced the world is going you know where in a hand basket, that a benevolent, magical, wonderful-for-all-humanity revolution is occurring and you are not even aware of it?

Here is a brief selection from parapsychologist Dean Radin’s new book, “The Science of Magic”:

Perhaps in recognition of parapsychology’s scientific status, in April 2024 one of my books was included in a feature article by the Times of India news service. The article listed eight books the Times selected that would “change the way you look at the universe.”[1] It included works by the authors Albert Camus, Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and Franz Kafka, and by physicists David Deutsch and Stephen Hawking. My book on that list was Entangled Minds, which focuses on the physics of psi.

As I was writing that last sentence, something caught my eye. I looked out the window just as a blue commercial van drove by with the word Magic emblazoned on the side. The van was part of a fleet for a plumbing company whose motto is “Service so good you’ll believe in magic.” One of its core values is “Get shit done,” which seems apt given its area of expertise. The synchronicity of writing about magic as the word magic appears outside your window is a sign that we’ve entered a zone where the laws of physics turn into mere suggestions.

One of the more celebrated physicists of the twentieth century, John Archibald Wheeler, put it this way: “Useful as it is under everyday circumstances to say that the world exists ‘out there’ independent of us, that view can no longer be upheld. There is a strange sense in which this is a ‘participatory universe.’ ”[2] In such a universe, Wheeler emphasized that physical laws are not fixed but rather are, as he put it, malleable. In his famously pithy style, he noted, “There is no law except the law that there is no law.”[3] Wheeler’s quip was strangely similar to the catchphrase of the notorious occultist Aleister Crowley, who said: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” This is not to say that Wheeler and Crowley were bosom buddies, because they barely existed in the same universe. On the other hand, is it a meaningful synchronicity? Let’s get shit done and find out.

Radin PhD, Dean. The Science of Magic: How the Mind Weaves the Fabric of Reality (pp. xi-xii).

I just met this morning with a wonderful young man (i’m sorry, kids, he was in his 30s, which seems VERY young to me) who was trained as a pharmacist and now works with ketamine assisted therapy and a new startup involving immersion technology, headed by a young (yep, young!) Indian American man who has been inspired by music and his practice of Yoga nidra to create a company which can lead people much more rapidly to deeper states of consciousness than meditation does for most.

So what does this have to do with my usual topics of effortless living and effortless mindfulness?

Circles of Awareness — with the deepest Consciousness in the center — “not I, but Christ in me;” the Buddha Nature; the one Mind, the Atman, the Sufi Beloved, Ein Sof

I was talking to Nick this morning, and at one point he talked about the seemingly infinite possibilities for transformation of consciousness, I agreed, in part, but added:

It ultimately is always — every moment, and dear readers, right this moment, now, here with you — about coming back to the center.

you can do this right now, beyond anything any ayahuasca, Headspace app, immersive technology, meditation “technique,” or other drugs or shamanic techniques or mindfulness practice can do.

Do you see, feel, hear everything around you? Effortlessly (meaning, it is all simply ‘coming to your awareness’?

Are you aware of thoughts, feelings, instinctive movements toward pleasure and away from pain, and all the rest of the infinitely varied “Stuff” that fills the human psyche?

Now, “turn your attention around” and note — as infinitely still as the space surrounding you, beyond all the “shit” of everyday existence, you can shift (shift happens, remember?) toward a recognizing of an infinitely still yet infinitely vibrant and alive Consciousness underlying all your experience.

It is there when you wake up, no matter how “shitty” you feel; it’s there in the mid morning rush, and the mid afternoon slump, and the early evening collapse into “entertain me please and help me forget about the day,” and the moments before you sleep when you either look forward to at least 6 hours of oblivion or you gently yet consciously transition into another profound state of consciousness.

Taoism: Shit happens

Judaism: Why does shit always happen to me?

Notice, even while reading those last 2 silly lines, this same boundless, vast consciousness is present, underlyign all your experience, accepting, allowing, open, even, if you taste it deeply enough, compassionate, joyful, loving and infinitely calm and peaceful.

Try it.

Look.

And remember, always, remember to be.

Congratulations, Don. That’s a fine list of authors you’ve joined in the Indian Times. I haven’t read ‘Entangled Minds’ but will get to it at some point.
